The Slide Years is a series in which I select an image my dad took from 1957-1982 with Kodachrome slide film, then I write a stream-of-consciousness essay – a sort of mini-memoir.
You may be looking at this photo and saying “What the…?” When Dad got the box of slides back from the film processor, why on earth didn’t he toss this one? He probably kept it for the same reason I did – it’s just so hilariously BAD.
Dad and Mom are all dressed up, not for a formal affair, maybe something for church, and Dad decided to commemorate the event. He set the camera on the tripod and grossly mis-framed, mis-focused, and chose a crappy backdrop, including a mirror and whatever that round thing is behind their heads.
But the priceless addition of one or two of us kids having sneaked down the stairs from our rooms to peek… Not exactly a photo bomb. Maybe just a photo slap.

Growing up, I always thought glasses were dorky. Now that I wear them much of the time, they’re stylish. 😉😁

Ha ha! I totally missed the photo bomb! We had a similar mirror, I think my sister still has it…considered chic and shabby now!

Omg the slides my parents have. My only question is why did they want to project pictures into a wall….

I think because you could show them to a crowd all at once (and eat popcorn without getting melted butter on the pictures).

This slide is classic. I love it and that you have it and have shared it here. Images of people were more precious back then– and you kept them all regardless of composition and lighting I suppose.

“Classic” – that’s a charitable description! I remember when I had to wait weeks to get my pictures back from the processor, and I’d be pissed if they made me pay for a worthless one (way underexposed, for example).

My parents were camera-challenged too, yet they kept every photo. I guess if you paid for them, you had to keep them!

Love this and processing was expensive so you often didn’t take many photos.
