Artful Durango – Part 1

I’ve enjoyed blogs about public art from around the world, so I am going to do a series highlighting some public art in Durango, Colorado. This installment features a few of the many murals around town. These are recent works (to my knowledge). I did not find information on the artist in a couple cases.

A north-facing wall on a car wash (north Main Ave.) features a work by Parker Ledford (#parkerhiart.) Wildlife is a recurring theme in many of the recent pieces.
A nice monochromatic piece on the south side of a private home. Artist unknown.
On the north side of a laundromat (north Main Ave.) this howling wolf is labeled “Rocky Mountain Wolf Project.” It is part of an organization based in Maryland. I daresay they won’t have wolves in their backyard anytime soon.
This eye-catching young birder by Mariah Kaminsky faces north Main Ave.

    1. Starting this project made me realize just how many murals I had not previously been aware of. I was going to add one more to this, but I couldn’t read the signature and want to see if I can find out who painted it.

  9. These are unique Eileen. I have been collecting some artsy items over the past month to make a post too Eilene. It was in the neighborhood while my car was in the shop with its AC issues. A fellow blogger in Berlin often posts photos of murals and artwork around the city- they have a lot of murals in Berlin, some which are on tall office buildings and are as tall as the buildings. Pretty amazing to see. We don’t have anything that fancy here.

      1. There is a mural in downtown Detroit that was painted by an artist years ago. The mural has whales on it. A billionaire investor (Dan Gilbert) who has bought most of the vacant buildings in Detroit and also owns the Cleveland Cavaliers professional basketball team, recently had advertising for his Rocket Mortgage Company painted over the whales mural and the artist has sued – it should be interesting.

      2. That does sound like a case for the books. I seriously doubt the artist has any standing. There’s a mural in Durango I wish I had a photo of. It’s on the side of a building and was advertising a restaurant that used to be there and which I worked at for a time. The owner of the property next door tore down a single story building on the lot and built a much larger building that completely hid the mural.

      3. That’s what the legal analyst on my all-news radio station said too. He donated his time/materials to the effort, but it benefited him and now the new owner has the right to put what he wants there. In typical social media fashion, someone started a campaign “to save the whales” which didn’t surprise me.
