Clifford Loyd Smith (1901–1977)
Clifford was born in Cunningham, Washington. He was 17 when his mother died. He probably bounced among his married siblings, not staying long enough to be enumerated in the 1920 census. He had an 8th-grade education and a career as a lineman for the phone company.
In 1924, Cliff married Minnie S. Danilson; they had no children. Though there seemed to be some animosity between Cliff and Grandpa, they did have an adventure together when Minnie drove them to the top of Tomers Butte to ski in deep snow.
“It was a clear cold night with a full moon. We skiied the seven miles back to town. … I almost lost a ski but found it again and we made the trip back on the snow very well.”
Cliff lived next door to brother Leon (Bill) in Moscow, and when Bill moved to Lake Chatcolet, Cliff followed a year later.

I get that impression, too. I think all the Smith boys, including Grandpa, liked to get up to no good at times.

I was following The Drabble site (120 word stories) and thought I should challenge myself to try a very short form for a change. These seemed good for that. I have Grandpa’s comments for color and plenty of photographs (I don’t count captions in my 150 words).

It really is a nice town. I enjoy my visits there, usually to the university library and historical society. We had a fun family reunion there in 2019.

I like the picture of Leon and Clifford Smith … they look a little mischievous and Leon (Bill) looks like he is holding his breath. Nice you have a modern photo of Clifford prior to his 1977 passing as well.
